State of Washington's Children, Summer 2002 Report
Full Report (1.7MB)
This year's report highlights child poverty and the challenges facing low-income working families in Washington. Our research finds that moving parents off welfare and into the workplace has not ensured economic success for all: 73 percent of Washington families living in poverty are headed by working adults. Poverty is more common for children outside the Metro Puget Sound region (King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties), under five, and for those in single-parent families.
By late 2000, an approximate quarter million Washington children (17 percent) were living below the official poverty level. Another quarter million children were above the poverty level, but with inadequate income. That adds up to about half a million children - approximately one in three - whose families are losing the battle to make ends meet.
