State of Washington's Children, Winter 2003 Report
Full Report (14MB)
As detailed in this year's State of Washington's Children, in contrast to more urban or suburban regions, Washington's rural areas are characterized by higher rates of childhood mortality, hospitalization for preventable conditions, foster care placements, infants born to unmarried mothers, overall poverty, child poverty, and, of course, unemployment. People who do find work in rural communities make less money per year, in part because good jobs- secure jobs that pay enough to support a family are far and few between.
